The Importance of Chinese Herbs for the New Year

by Dr. Randy Martin, OMD, LAc, CCH, QME

I woke up this morning and was taking my usual morning dose of Chinese herbs and suddenly had an insight I wanted to share with you. It’s about the importance of Chinese herbs.

I take my Chinese herbal prescription every day. Some days it’s this one, and other days it’s that one. I have a number of them so that I can choose from one or the other depending on exactly what is going on with my body, mental function, emotions, or overall energy or spiritual feelings on that particular day.

There is usually a theme. Sometimes it’s that I’m feeling anticipatory anxiety about something upcoming in the week. Sometimes it’s that I’m having trouble sleeping. Sometimes it’s that I’m feeling a bit down – this week one of my patients isn’t doing well, and it’s weighing on my mood.

Other days, it may be an ache or pain, headache, or backache. Have you noticed that your aches and pains or swelling tend to be worse during the colder or damp weather?

I lecture and write a lot about the importance of Acupuncture and Homeopathy, but I rarely speak about the importance of Chinese herbs in our daily program of health.

I think the thing I like most about Chinese herbs is that they are almost like taking Western medications, in terms of their strength and effectiveness, yet they have no negative side-effects.

Think of Chinese herbs like a gigantic tidal wave inside your body. They basically move in and like a strong wave, they alter and move your stuck energy. If your neurotransmitters are not balanced and functioning right, they will create a tidal wave of positive thoughts by altering the neurotransmitters. If you menstrual cycle is causing pain or heavy bleeding or cravings, there’s an herbal formula for that too!

If you have a muscle spasm, headache, sciatic pain, back or neck pain, Chinese herbal formulas will move in and create a tidal wave to literally MOVE your stuck energy and remove the blockage creating the spasms and pain. THEY WILL ACTUALLY REMOVE THE PAIN.

Chinese herbs have the rather unique ability to target the particular part of your body that you want to be focusing on. It can be your back, knees, ankles, shoulders, hands, stomach, intestines, liver, heart, lungs, immunity, sinus’, etc. Over the many years that Chinese herbs have been in use, the experts have learned the particular characteristics and chemical constituents of each herb, and which body part they will target for healing.

Irregardless of whetheer you have anything “wrong”, the use of Chinese herbs can also be used to optimize your overall function. You can select a formula on a given day to just increase energy and brain function or to increase endorphins and serotonin.

So I urge you to take advantage of this wonderful and ancient tradition, and keep a few Chinese herbal formulas on-hand, using them daily, in the morning and evening, as another vital part of your overall treatment program for Optimal Health.

Blessings and Health to you for the New Year!
